Some very interesting things have happened recently. It started with the decision to do a PhD. Well, to me that wasn’t a very hard decision because it just seemed like the next step on whatever divergent pathway I’m on at the moment. The hardest thing was finding something that would sustain my interest for years on end. I am so easily bored! It’s mostly a good fault but sometimes a really bad, not-recommended-at-all, trait of which I am not proud.
Anyway, I start a PhD in Communication (creative writing) at the University of Canberra on the 1st July. This will let me focus on the things that tie my life together: that is, how you reconcile a work life based in science with a real life surrounded by arts. I’ve concentrate on the theme that sustained my masters – how illness affects young adults. Yep, I’ve gotta say that I’m pretty excited about this. Obviously, because I live about 8 hours drive from The Nation’s Capital, I’ll be an off-campus student with times I land in Canberra. Distance education technology is standard at work so it doesn’t faze me at all that I’ll be using it as well. They house the Lu Rees Archives at UC, a collection of children’s literature, so that’s one of the first things I’ll explore.
The very same week that I’m accepted at UC, I have two publishers contact me about two different manuscripts. Nothing has happened yet but just maybe the momentum wheels are turning for 2010! I can feel my battery levels charge to full. Now that’s a feeling I haven’t had for a while. Excellent!
